Thanks for all the info guys! Got to wondering about the balancer being off, so static timed it yesterday. It was only about 3/4, less than a degree out! Its got a new set of plugs, and I'm gonna put on a new set of wires and cap this weekend. Also plan to pop the rocker covers and see if all the valves closing. Then I'm gonna run her out a couple hours, hopefully loosen everything up. Charles - thanks for the link. Pi - I kinda had the same experience on a Chevy 350 once. I replaced the cap and rotor, but like a doofus didn't make marks on the old one. But I had a chiltons, so I put the wires on exactly as in the book. After about 4 hours of no start, I advanced all the wires once, ran great. Has anybody else ever got wrong info from a shop manual? p.s., this engine only has 68000. How long do these timing sprokets/chains last? Should I swap it now while I'm at it?
