I didn't chime in to the previous funeral cost post because everything was pretty well discussed.
I've given instructions to my family to have my remains cremated. A whole lot cheaper, and I never could stand the thought of spending money that my survivors could use for groceries. You don't have to have the fancy urn that they try to sell you. My brother's ashes were in what appeared to be an unpainted coffee can. His instructions were that he wanted them poured out in a specific location that he always liked to visit. And the urn would be good for what? after being emptied.
Some folks can't stand the thought of cremation - they say they don't want to be burned up - I say - I don't want a bunch of worms eating on me - but the big thing is what I perceive as a waste of money that may very well be needed elsewhere.
If your family hasn't been exposed to anything other than the traditional burial, they'll probably be resistant to cremation, but it is a way to knock maybe 75 to 90 percent off of our final cost. I definately would not go against my loved ones wishes.
I know your post was about insurance. This is my personal alternative to insurance. Sorry for the long post.
