I agree with Mike and Salmoneye. If a 6V system is "properly maintained" there is no advantage to trying to outguess the engineers with an 8V or 12V modification. Most people don't, so the easy fix is to plop in a higher voltage. Just remember that the key is maintenance. When replacing the battery cables use 1/0 cables, the 12V store bought cables(usually 6 ga.) will NOT carry the necessary current when it's cold. A GOOD ground is a must; time, dirt, rust and loose connections will zap a battery quickly.
