This is not making sense. If you owned a trucking business, the 50 cent a mile deduction has nothing to do with you- thats for business mileage in lieu of itemizing costs. Your return should show gross income, less expenses, equals net taxable income (to oversimplify). If dad is trying to somehow inject the 50 cent a mile deduction on top of writing off expenses, then he needs to attend a few more continuing education courses.
