Mike, Salmoneye gave a good bit of advise on using a 8 over 6 volt battery. Tractor has probaly started quite a few years ok with the 6 volt system. Something interesting is to check the cranking amps of a good heavy duty 6 volt battery over a 8 volt battery that you can buy today. My expierence is that the 6 volts are higher most of the time. Just my 2 cents worth. I have 3 tractors on 6 volts and they all start no matter the conditions. Good Luck.
