If that steep grade really needs mowing, and if it's possible, try going straight up and down the hill. This will reduce you chances of a rollover. Of course your ground speed will need to be low, but with a rotary mower you can still have the needed RPM's to mow.

Like the others have stated mowing 40 is not wise, hay it, pasture it, tons of other possiblities. I myself, have a hill that has a 7% grade on it, with a pond on the top of it. The only reason it get cut is because it keeps the wife happy when she looks out the back window.
