Back in the 1820s here in Indiana there was a tradition of the "race for the bottle" after the wedding/reception usually held at the new couples place. What they did was to set a bottle of rum or whiskey on top of a fence post at the new couples house/cabin and line up for the gun to go off. The wedding party would either run on foot or on horseback and who ever grabbed the bottle first , the party would continue at that persons place leaving the new couple to "enjoy the evening with some "privacy". My guess is the tradition faded because of bottles getting broken and leaving the party dry. Not many liquor stores around back then although some farmers had stills.
