HI Bill - Reason the motor runs on with an idiot light conected the alternator circuit is you're using too large a lamp as an idiot light. (It's backfeeding enough current thru the coil with the ign switch open to cause the coil to fire.) Replace it with a lamp rated around 200 ma @ 12 volts...like a #194 or #1815 auto side marker lamp/instrument panel lamp...the problem should go away. If you don't want the warning light showing, wrap it in black tape and tuck it someplace handy in the wiring harness. Or you can substitute a 1 amp 50 PRV diode in place of the lamp - install it so it passes current to the #1 alt terminal from the switch. However I personally like having the idiot lamp - since others often run my tractors and are not always so good about watching the gages.
