I was bidding on a rather nice 10 ton Baker Steamroller, when the owner decided that he didn't like the Pa boiler inspectors, and didn't want anybody else to have to deal with them... so he sold it to some guys who had bid less, but lived in OH. Then I remembered this odd looking 25HP 20th Century engine for sale at a show we had attended a couple years before. It was still for sale, and the price had come down a bit, so we decided to look at it again. I offered a bit less than 2/3 of the guy's asking price, and eventually got it for that.
