The nail heads collected soot because they are colder than the surrounding sheet rock. Since the nails are driven into the studs, heat from the nail is conducted to the outside wall. That causes moisture to condense on the nails, which in turn picks up soot. It doesn't help that the unvented heater converts kerosene into carbon dioxide and water. Burn a few gallons of kerosene and you've effectively dumped a bunch of water inside your house.
