In this area the farmers use the #2 homeheating oil, dyed red, no problems that I know of. I have a gravity bulk tank and keep the fuel for very long periods of time. I do not belive this to be a good practice and am not recommending it to others. I think one of the reasons I have avoided problems with long storage is that there is a 5 micron filter between the tank valve and the hose. I suggest such a filter for all applications.
