b&d, I don"t know "why" but I can tell you in my experience that I have yet to have that problem with two AD 152 diesels that have over 6,000 hours together, only one water pump replacement due to a bolster issue. It "appears" that the fan is well balanced even with the long extension. I would venture a guess that the front axle support makes that extension a requirement and it was probably a fairly serious engineering challenge. "Your mileage may vary".
