About 16 years ago I took a trip to Israel. At that time, tensions between the Israelis and Arabs were not too bad, and it was considered fairly safe to travel in that part of the world. Yet everywhere my tour went, we saw lots of young people, male and female, wearing Israeli Army uniforms and carrying M-16's. I never heard a shot while I was there, but you could see that there were bullet craters in the sides of many of the buildings. The Israeli soldiers were friendly to us Americans and were usually smiling. I learned that almost ALL Israelis are expected to serve in the armed services and have active duty until they are 50.

When we were going to leave Israel, everyone who was going to be on the flight had to stay in an impound area for about 4 hours. During this time we were each interviewed by officials, and we also had to identify every item that was in our suitcases and carry-on bags, piece by piece. The officials would not let me keep the can of Foamy shave cream that I had brought from home that was in my luggage. But I think the can of shave cream was the only thing they had a problem with in my luggage. I heard loud, angry conversations in a language I could not understand, so it appeared that other travelers were less pleased with the procedure. But the Israelis took the security of the plane passengers seriously, and nothing bad happened on our flights.

We flew on TWA in one of the last Lockheed 1011 jumbo jets flying. That airplane had all the rest rooms in our cabin near the tail of the plane, and to get there you had to walk through and wait in line in the smoking section. That section seemed to be all Arabs, who scowled at us Americans as they smoked their cigarettes, one after another.

It was really good to get back to New York City. That scowling kind of got to me.

Considering the various events that have happened over the years, I think that tight airport security is justified. I also think that it is probably kind of stupid to carefully search little old ladies and other people that are very unlikely to be a problem. But political correctness will not allow the officials to key in on the groups who HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN THE PROBLEM.

Maybe the Israelis have the right idea: carefully search and interrogate all passengers. Although it is a hassle, it probably makes flying safer. And I bet it discourages the bad guys from flying, at least from Israeli airports.
