I used a ferguson 35 for several years. It had a three sp with a high low trans. This one was gas, but I believe they put diesel in them later. It has a two stage clutch, the lower for the pto and the upper for the main trans. I would stay away from the 8-9ns. Without the live pto, the inertia from the brush hog will send you through the fence, barn, or whatever if you can't make the turn when you stop. I will say they were a GREAT TRACTOR in their day. You can get an overrunning clutch for the pto shaft. The splines are also not standard, but there is an after market shaft that replaces the small one on the 8-9ns. Good hunting.
