As I can recall, back when I was a boy, they were just axle shafts. No paint at all and I seen some farmers that greased the axle and wrapped a burlap sack around the axle and wired it on. That way when it came time to move the wheels in or out, it was easier. Come to think of it, I haven't thought about that since I was a boy. I'm 59 now. Funny what will stick in the mind.
