I like to think of myself as a pretty well rounded mechanic, only thing I"ve never done to an automobile is rebuild an automatic transmission, well the opportunity presented itself a couple months ago.
2005 Ford Focus, (sister in laws car) we purchased the most complete rebuild kit Rock Auto offered, discs, plates, gaskets and seals. We have a Ford service manual for the car and went to work.
We had to buy an aluminum end plate from Ford as this is what was actually wrong with it, it had beaten out the flat roller bearing between the drum and plate and let the endplay get outta whack and ruin the plate.
Anyway we get it back in and it worked perfectly for a few hundred miles then it lost OD, well the kit didnt come with the OD band so we get one from Ford and install it, we didnt need it according to my measurements there was only .001 difference but it was inexpensive enough so we put it in, again it worked great for a few hundred miles.
Now we have lost 3rd and OD, never any CEL"s I tried my code scanner on it today and it had nothing. It will make the shift from 2nd to what should be 3rd but it just freewheels so I assume the solenoids are working.
My fears of the magic of auto trans. are coming home to roost. Can anyone offer an idea, word of encouragement, etc.?
