Old joke from engineering school, but still one of my favorites.
Q: How can you determine the height of a building using a barometer?
A: There are three ways:
1. Use the barometer to measure the barometric pressure at the ground and on the roof of the building. You can then calculate how tall the building is. But that's a lot of work.
2. A BETTER way is to go to roof of the building and drop the barometer over the side. Measure the time it takes the barometer to crash to the ground, then calculate the height of the building based on the acceleration of gravity.
3. The BEST way is to go to the building superintendent and say "I'll give you this cool barometer if you tell me how tall this bulding is."
