Yes, a timer is a good way to go. But, that only works when you plan ahead, and for a daily user.
Also not much sense of having a timed block heater on a tractor that spends most of the winter sitting and only gets used once in awhile.
As far as a 500 watt tank heater? I've never seen one. Smallest I've ever seen was a 750 watt. Most of mine are 1500 watt and I have a few that are 2000 watt.
1500 watt tank heater in a 100-200 cubic inch engine with a 3-4 gallon system will usually heat enough in one hour to start when it's zero F outside - but that's cutting it close. 2 hours is better. We get down to minus 35 here, but at those temps, I rarely need to use a tractor or plow truck. Usually, when it snows the temps tend to come up in the upper 20s F.
Now, if I still had to spread manure every morning, I'd have to have timer and good heater. That or a gas tractor.
