The National Electrical Code is first intended for safety. Many wiring techniques will work very well from an operational point of view. Some that work well may also be very dangerous. Working well is not the real test of an electrical job well done. Properly done according to code, electrical hazards can be reduced to the practical minimum. I started as helper in 1947 and eventually taught night classses at community college for 26 years.
