I once spent a couple days off and on inside the machinery cab of a large crane. There was a 1200 hp Cummins V12 on the hoists and a 600 hp 6 on the swinger/gen drive. I had on ear muff hearing protectors on top of ear plugs. Didn't matter. The noise just hammered your whole bod. When you got out of that thing at the end of the day you felt like barfing and were fatigued for several hours afterward. This phenomenon was apparently first observed among the crewmen on the first WWI German submarines, at least the crewmen closest to the engine.
