You dont say what brand the headgate is, but for most of them, like the Filson, there is a stop adjustment that keeps the gate from opening any furthur backwards than where you set it. Look at it closely for this adjustment. My Filson has a fin through a piece of square metal that has different lengths on the sides. In other words you should be opening up the gate to fit against the stop, then if they try backing up the gate will not open any wider. Tom
