I'm up to ~120,000 miles on my second VW TDI, a '03 Jetta Wagen. My first TDI was a 2K NB TDI that my ex insisted on taking heh heh heh.
I live on a 23 sq. mile island in Lake Michigan so the Jetta does not usually got to warm up in the winter. It still does high 30s mpg in the winter and gets a tank or two of 50+ mpg in the summer.
As to timing belts, you should not do your own but leave it to someone that does them as an independent pro. The parts changers at the stealership's no-service department only want your money and they won't hesitate to sabotage y our engine to get it.
