The preservative action is something chemical to do with the peat; there were several old bodies dug out of peat bogs fairly recently, looking like they"d been tanned. North Africa was another front where each side salvaged and used the others equipment, at least with the Brits and Rommels people; made recognition dicey at times. I can"t recall anything about US units doing so, at least not officially.
