Anti-Freeze Story - BEWARE OF THE CHEAP STUFF !!!

[ View Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Return to Forum ]

Posted by Alberta Mike on January 30, 2001 at 18:38:32 from (209.115.159.106):

Last fall I was going to move a tractor I am restoring into the back yard (from my garage) so I thought I'd put in new antifreeze. Went to Canadian Tire (I see they advertise on the scoreclock at some NFL games so they must be in the States too) and saw some of the "el-cheapo" stuff (no-name) and it was on sale too, so I thought what the heck, great deal and it's just an old tractor so I bought some. Went home and mixed it 2:1 (coolant:water) which gives as much freezing protection as anyone would want almost anywhere. After mixing it in a big pail, I thought I might as well test what I've got before adding it into the tractor. Well, to my surprise, it showed that it was only good for about -25 degrees Celsius (which is a lot warmer than what the mixing chart said it would handle). Tried another antifreeze tester and also my neighbours with the same result. Took the empty container back with the mixed stuff in the pail and told them the story. Also told them that they should do a little checking and testing themselves before someone breaks out an engine block (like I almost did had I not checked). They didn't seem too concerned, as a matter of fact the sales guy probably didn't know what I was talking about. I doubt very much whether he even mentioned it to anyone. In any event, it goes to show you that it is worthwhile checking the mixture before using it, and also to avoid the super-cheap stuff since it is obviously watered down (or at least the stuff I got seemed to be).

Today's Featured Article - History of the Nuffield Tractor - by Anthony West. The Nuffield tractor story started in early 1945. The British government still reeling from the effects of the war on the economy, approached the Nuffield organization to see if they would design and build an "ALL NEW" British built wheeled tractor, suitable for both British and world farming. ...
