In 1953, Chevrolet increased displacement from 216 to 235 cu. in. For Powerglide transmissions, the engine had aluminum pistons, rod bearing inserts and full pressure oiling for the rod bearings. The oil pressure gauge read about 60 PSI maximum. The manual transmission cars were 235, but had cast iron pistons, babbitted rods with splash lubrication. The oil pressure gauge read about 30 PSI maximum. In 1954, all the Chevrolet engines were upgraded with rod inserts and aluminum pistons. This basic design began in 1929-my first car was a 1933 Chevrolet. The design was updated in 1937. The next design change was in 1953. This engine was replaced in 1962 with a new design having 7 main bearings instead of the previous 4.
