One of my best buddies from teenage and high school days chain smoked all his life, and died of lung cancer at 52.
My father was a life long pipe smoker. He developed throat cancer at age 71. They cured the cancer, but had to remove his voice box in the process. He talked by holding an electronic gadget next to his throat. He lived another 15 years and was cancer free when he died of a stroke.
People who say they want to quit smoking, but can't, are liars. They don't want to quit, they just want to act like they do. They just haven't had the right motivation.
When I met my wife, I was smoking a pack and a half a day. On our second date, she owned up to it that she's allergic to tobacco smoke. I took a pack of cigarettes out of my shirt pocket, threw it into a nearby trash can, and haven't touched one since. That was 45 years ago.
