sorry for the delay in answering. The backfire could be wrong cylinder firing because of bad distributor cap. Reomve no. 3 plug wire and see if the engine runs. No 3 plug wire track goes close to the center post of the cap and could be taking all of the spark. Also, I have seen the valves sticking and thus working slow. Compression could be good, but bad when running. To remove the diatributor cap screws, first tighten then loosen. This seems to help lossen screws when different metals are being used. Hope this helps
