When you say brakes do you mean Brake lights or electric brakes.
Electric brakes you need a controler. Simple answer is to just put in a seprate coupler instead of making a adapter. This is what I did when I did the same thing. Course I added a controller also.
As to hooking up for the separate brake lights just get out your test light and start checking.
BTW if you get stopped and your trailer brakes are not hooked up be prepared to get put out of service till you fix that. Think about putting all this equipment together at a weighstation when this happens. Best to do it right the first time.
Don"t mean to flame but even though the tractors brakes will be doing most of the work you need them on the trailer also.
