My in-laws buy a new Escape every two years. They had a 2005 with the 3 liter V6. It's basically a Mazda and very well built other then nuisance "check engine" lights coming on around every 20K miles. It's all-wheel drive, but there is a button to make it more aggressive for snow and ice. It makes the front to rear differential slip less. The just a got a new one with the four-cylinder engine. Has almost as much power as the 3 liter V6 and they've gotten 30 MPG with it. The 2005 with the 3 liter V6 got a best of 25 MPG. I don't know exactly what comes with the tow-package. All of their Escapes were ordered with it - but the newest one didn't even have a rear hitch on it when it came in. They had to bring it back to the dealer later for the install - so it sounds like there wasn't much to the option. The dealer claimed Ford sent the hitch as a separate part and they sent the wrong one. No mention of an exta cooler and this Escape has the new 6 speed automatic.
