That is a position control link that turns off the flow of hydraulic fluid when the arms reach the position that your control lever calls for. Without it, the arms come all the way up and try to go farther, causing the pressure relief valve to be overridden and loading the engine. Get it fixed, of course. "A stitch in time saves nine."
