My 98 3/4 ton has gone through 3 pumps in the last 5 years, the first signs of failure have been a lack of steering on start-up when it"s cold outside, then it gets worse... are your brakes working OK? the power steering pump also powers the power brakes, once my pump got bad the brakes didn"t want to work when the oil was cold either. Not a big job to change the pump, just fiddly... Could also be the valve gear in the steering box not working right, having re-read your post that sound like it might be the problem... good luck, oj
