AM signals will skip off the ionisphere at night and can be picked up far away from where they originate. For that reason they are required to reduce power at night so they don't interfere with other distant stations assigned the same frequency. This station powering UP at night would attract negative attention from the FCC. FM signals are "line of sight" and won't bend well around the earth's curvature.
