Couple Tips...
1. Spring side faces what you are sealing. In the case of engine blocks, gear boxes, etc. you are keeping the fluids in, therefore the spring faces inward. The exception is grease applications that will allow grease to purge past the seal. (wheel bearings, etc) Then the spring faces out allowing the grease to pass.
2. Watch out for sharp keyways or splines on the shaft when installing the seal!!. This will cut the lip causing it to leak. Use tape to cover these when installing the seal.
3. Do not pound directly on the seal when installing it. This can bend the seal and in some cases pop the spring off inside the block. Use a block of wood or something to spread out the load when installing. Plus it softens the blow of a hammer.
4. Lube the lip. It also helps to moisten the lip of the seal with the fluid you are retaining. Oil, grease, etc. This helps ease installation and prevents the lip from rolling back when sliding on the shaft.
