Doug, I'm not sure where you are located, but here in northeast Missouri you would not likely get brome to start in the seeding year. It is very slow to get going and frequently doesn't grow much until the second year. Many around here in your situation would "burn down" the ground (either chemically or by actual fire) and then seed oats with brome mixed in. You don't have to seed the oats very heavy, either, just enough to get the ground covered, probably around a bushel or slightly more. The oats will keep the ground covered until the brome can get started. If it were mine, I don't believe I would try straight brome as the weeds will take things before the brome can get going.
