Most people think this way, however you cannot hold by the od as accurately as you can by using an expanding mandrel in the id. With a mandrel inside the tube, the od is turned concentric with the id. Holding by the od one must adjust the 4jaw chuck as close as the dial indicator will register, both diametricly and longitudially.
