When all else fails, read the directions! Dad was a stickler on this and forced me to be. But it's amazing how many people don't or won't. It should be a foregone conclusion that when you aquire a piece of equipment, you should try to get at least an owner's manual. Most manufacturers supply them free of charge. And for the older stuff they are available for a nominal charge. There's a whole industry dedicated to this. One would think that somebody need not be told to get the book on their equipment, But....
