The last time I did sandblasing, we used silica sand. I bought some a couple of weeks ago at my building supply store and saw all kinds of warnings on the bag and receipt (DO NOT USE FOR SANDBLASTING). Turns out that this too can kill you. Anyhow, took it back and traded it for "Black Beauty" which is a slag material. It's about $8 for 100 lbs. Havn't tried it on sheet metal yet, but I will after heeding all the good advice on this board.
