There are basically two kinds that I'm aware of, and both are designed to transport logs from where they are cut, either to a yard or to a mill. They allow you to use a farm tractor instead of investing in a 'skidder'. Essentially, they are a two wheeled trailer that hooks to the drawbar on the tractor, or a small dozer. One kind has the wheels and the arch quite close to the tractor, and lifts just the front of the log and 'skids' the rear of the log along the ground. I need to transport logs via a paved road, so I designed and built one with a 14' boom between the hitch and the arch, and chokers front and rear that use an electric winch and cable system to lift the entire log clear of the ground.
