My boss also built his big barn (150x50x18) out of drill stem for uprights, then welded purlin to the stems and screwed the sheet metal to that. It also has withstood the test of time.
If you had a structural engineer to bounce ideas off - so much the better, but its not rocket science, if you use some common sense and check around for some examples to go by.
