I am an independent agent in Oklahoma, I shop 23 carriers to try to find the best premium and the best coverage for the insureds I serve. You will have to try to get into a niche market that the online people don"t want to serve. I try to specialize in placing rural risks. Most national carriers and online companies runbackwards when a fire district has a rating of 8 and above or more than 5 miles from a fire department, I place those risks. As an independent rather than captive, I do not have to meet a quota for a companies financial products. Life, annuties, banking, retirement plans and securities. A captive agent can only sell products from the company that he is appointed. I am not getting rich by any measure, but it pays the bills. If you decide to work for a captive company, be prepared to be married to that job, because to adequately sell the financial products, you have to be able to work from 5 pm to 12 pm, but you must be at the office timely next day to answer questions. Would I do this again, Yes, it beats milking a 100 head of holsteins morning and night 7 days a week. Just my thoughts James
