Using the DDG as a protein source is economical in many regions of the country but, the same regions usually have reasonably priced Alfalfa products. On average, a 1000 pound mature horse needs approximately 1.25 pounds of digestible protein per day for maintenance if not ridden or worked hard. Any combination can be calculated, such as 10 lbs. corn 7% (dig.) = .70 lbs. -- 5 lbs. Alfalfa pellets at 13%(dig.) = .65 lbs. -- = 1.35 lbs. digestible protein total.
