I think this thread started out with snow. A wide tread works good on soft ground. Snow does not offer any traction. A narrow tread or a skinny tire cuts down to the ground or road bed. That is where you get traction. I have driven Model A Fords with 4.50x19 tires in snow where 4 wheel drives would fear to tread.
