On older tractors it was measured mechanically off of one of the gears on the engine. On more modern tractors it's done electronically. Why hours and not miles? At 6 mph, I don't cover too many miles with a tractor in a field, but the engine is going full bore for hours on end. Thats most of it. Tractors do a lot of engine work at low or no ground speeds. If your car were running at max RPM for hours on end, you would rather use engine hours. Cars get the oil changed at 3 to 5 thouhsand miles, tractors at 100 to 200 hours. It just works better for keeping track of maintanance.
