Ferguson got his patent on the three-point concept in 1926, and fabricated one to go with it. I can't find any record, so there's no telling how it compared to/how closely it resembled the one that made it onto the early Fords.
That said, if your grandfather had the same idea on his own, good on him. If he saw the Ferguson model and had his own ideas about how to improve on it so that folks in the neighborhood had him fab up for them, that's good, too. If there's anything to the legend, it sounds like he was a clever and industrious sort of fellow, whether he came up wit the original concept or not.
