IHC Red: The rust on Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is the same rust that affects Hawthorn and crabapples, as well as fruit apple species. It is controlled with timely application of fungicide (Bravo, etc.) in spring. Two applications per label directions are better. Don't let the rust steer you away from planting them. In wet years, like this year in the midwest, the disease will be worse. In my experience, the disease is worse in a nursery setting. Guess this is to be expected; there are more trees growing close together so the fungus can spread to another host easier. BTDT. On the juniper, the rust can be picked off rather easily by hand, as comparted to on hawthorn, for example.
