Tom, As the others have posted, yes the chains are definitely worth the money. An alternative to buying the pricey stuff is to go to almost any farm auction (at least here in Wisconsin), and pick up a used set for less than half price. They may be worn, but they will work fine. If they are not exactly the correct size, they will work well with minimal modification.
I too cannot imagine working in the snow without the chains.
