In my experience, I would yes. After there is a layer of slippery, slick snow or ice, it really becomes difficult to move snow without the chains. I know what you are saying; hate to spend the money but if you live in an area wher you have to move a lot of snow over the course of the winter, or even if it's that one-time-only situation during "The Perfect Blizzard," they are nearly indispensible. As an example, even my JD 70 with new, loaded tires will sit and spin on slick or icy surfaces. Put on the chains and I can go anywhere.
