The hose that goes to the top of the radiator from the heater core is a return line, and that is where it is supposed to go. The hose from the intake manifold to the heater core is the one that should have the flow control alve in it. If the engine is not getting warm, it has to be the thermostat. I know you said it went in right, that is with the pointy part up. I bet it has a week copper pellet in it, that is the part that controls at what temp the spring opens allowing the coolant to flow. It is also possible if you had any debris, such as a broken peice of your old gasket that fell into the manifold, it got stuck in the thermostat when it opened. Just for information the direction of flow is from the lower radiator hose to the water pump, through the block and up to the thermostat, and back to the radiator. New Thermostats are only a few bucks, I would gamble and change it again, puttting in a 195 from Stant.
