Those Firestones were some of the best tires I ever owned. I had actually taken them off the Explorer at 45M miles and put them on my F100 because I calculated they were only half worn out. My wifey wanted new tires 'cause she's the one still working and she drives some steep hills here in the back woods of upper NYS. Let me tell you what I think is the main problem. Aluminum wheels tend to corrode at the tire bead which causes leakage after a few years. People don't pay enuf attention to tire pressure and when run low on air, tires get hot. A great deal of the reported accidents happened in the southern states and South America where pavement heat adds to the problem. Incidentally, I just got a new sticker from Ford to put on my driver's door. It tells me to put 30 PSI in my tires instead of the previously recommended 26 PSI. I always ran 32 PSI anyway. BTW, my Firestone dealer told me he found only one tire (out of 240) that had the slightest hint of tread separation.
