Your comments about a warm 6v battery are certainly true. The only problem with the idea is that most of us are too lazy to pull the battery during the winter. So then we end up with the 12v jump because we don't have a spare battery (or the time to warm up the one in the tractor). The only time I ever needed to jumpstart my dad's 6v 2N was after it had sat in below zero weather for more than two weeks. If folks just follow the 6v mantra (clean, bright, tight, and thick), 6v seems to do the job OK.
